I love Karyn.  She has so much wisdom and knowledge to share, but best of all she seems so down to earth and reasonable.  I have to go to Chitown someday and meet her.

I did really, really well today.

  • OJ for Breakfast
  • 1 Banana
  • Handful of raw peanuts (waited too long for lunch)
  • Large salad with red onion, carrots, olives, broccoli garbanzo beans, olive oil and apple cider vinegar.
  • 3 nut balls (soaked raw almonds and walnuts with agave and dates) – not really hungry this evening.  Salad filled me up
  • Another glass of OJ

I’m starting the 21 Day Challenge in the middle of already doing P90X with my boyfriend.  Headed off to do tonight’s work out now.

All my recovering sugar addicts out there know what I’m going through. My head hurts.  Not with a typical, throb.  I wouldn’t call it a headache.  It feels more like pressure.  It happened the last time I was 90% raw for a few days and it will pass.  Sugar is not my master.  Sugar is not to blame.  If I want to change, I have the power to change and I’m claiming that power now.

Since Monday I’ve been 90-100% raw each day and exercised 30 min each day.  I’m down 2 pounds over this period. I feel like this is the place, the moment, the feeling, the place in time where my paradigm shifts.  I’m changing.

I made nut meat delight last night with soaked walnuts, red onion, and celery all blended in a blender.  Then I seasoned it with cilantro, cummin, Lowery’s, and pepper.  I put the blend in romaine leaves and ate it lettuce wrap style.  YUMMY!

I’ve been going through cravings.  I haven’t had much of an appetite in the evenings.  All I want after work is some juice or soda and microwaved butter popcorn.  Sigh.  I’m eating really well during the day so I’m sure that’s part of the issue.  I think it’s more so rebellion.  You know how little kids act when you tell them they can’t have something.  They pout.  They resist.  I think that somewhere in my subconscious, there is a lil girl pouting because I’m not giving her any sugar.  Well, just like a good parent, I’m training my body in the way that it should go.  I’m giving myself discipline and direction.  It’s an awesome gift to give, too. 🙂

I’ll have to make a green smoothie when I get home.  Time to take time and visualize this healthy and happy body that will be birthed out of the changes I’m making in the NOW.

Hey there,

I see that sometimes people find this site by searching for “black raw foodist” and “black vegan”.  I’ve joined sites like Soul Veg Folk trying to connect with other African Americans interested in or living the  raw food lifestyle.

If you are a black raw foodist, let me know.  Tell me about your journey.  I’d love to add you too my blog roll too.  I’m in IT and I’m considering creating a site for us.  I think veganism and eating natural could truly benefit our community in terms of health and welness.

Blessings

Finding the raw food community has been a spiritual experience. It has brought new life to my body, mind, and spirit. When you are sick you pray for a miracle or just give up and die. I was not about to give up.After being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 1985; and also pregnant the same year. I decided to control my diet with lots of green salads. I had read somewhere that green salads were brain food. At the time I knew nothing about enzymes and raw food. A healthy baby was my goal. When my son was born healthy I went right back to my fried and greasy foods (SAD- Standard American Diet). I was a good cook and I loved to display my culinary skills; I was my own best customer. After all, there is always a reason to fry chicken. Coupled with an array of starches (sweet potatoes, macaroni & cheese, peas & rice) and very few vegetables, my blood sugar levels and weight soared out of control. Poor food combinations were the problem. Proteins and starches clog your system; they do not digest well together. The digestive system has to work longer and harder to break food down and pass it through the system.

Don’t ask me how but one day I awoke unable to breathe. There I was in the intensive care unit of the hospital; asthma was the culprit. The situation was serious; the medicines did not work well together. The prednisone worked against the insulin. This went on for 3 weeks. I was released from the hospital with bags of medicine. My body was so depleted that I could hardly get out of bed. I knew I needed a way back.

Throughout the years I had read a lot and had taken herb classes. While buying some fried fish in a Brooklyn market I saw ginseng. After all ginseng is supposed to give energy, and can be beneficial for diabetes and asthma. It worked for me; in a few weeks I was back to work feeling stronger but not my best. However, my weight was climbing. I made the usual attempts to lose weight. I tried it all, Bahamian diet, hypnotism, you name it. Still no real nutrition.

My family and friends were concerned about my weight. A good friend recommended a fasting group. Dr. Valentine explained how a 30-day juice fast with fresh carrot juice and fruit juices would drastically improve my health. He was right. I lost 30 lbs. and my need for medication. Detoxification was the process; the elimination of toxins through diet and colon cleansing. The repair of the body with live juices (freshly squeezed) and herbs was the healing remedy. Shortly after the fast I learned about food combining. I had never felt better.

One problem – I did not make this my way of life. Back to the old foods and to disease. This time I tipped the scales at 310. I needed help. I began water aerobics religiously. This was good, but I needed more. I secretly knew the hazards of diabetes; my grandmother had both of her legs amputated. Now after several years of being a diabetic my body was deteriorating, I was feeling the side effects of numbness in my fingers and toes, plus blurred vision. It was really getting scary. I knew I was in trouble.

I had heard of several naturopathic doctors in New York, but I was not sure if they could help me. So I prayed for a miracle. A few months later a friend told me about an herb doctor who was coming to Petersburg. I went to see him and started my journey back to health. The idea of eating an all raw foods diet was new to me. I made the transition, however, with the help of a lifelong friend who had studied with Viktoras Kulvinskas (the grandfather of the raw food movement). The doctor put me on raw foods for 30 days. Avocados were my passion, coconuts were my bread. I became energized and I felt 10 years younger. How could this happen? Food in its natural state; raw fruits, nuts, and vegetables have live enzymes. Enzymes replenish the cells. The live foods bring about an accelerated reaction in the digestion of foods. Since the body is no longer struggling to digest dead foods; the enzymes are able to work to regenerate the body.

As with any new program, there were ups and downs. I read more and learned more. I then became familiar with the raw food community. Todd Ewen and David Shore taught me to prepare the foods. Todd gave me my first raw food preparation class where I learned to prepare foods that are delicious and all raw. I can still taste my first raw tomato soup and raw bread. I then started on a quest for more information. I have driven and flown almost everywhere to gain more raw knowledge. I received a Raw Food Chef Certification from The Raw Family of Oregon. This family gave me so much and took me to a whole new level. I am a state certified nurse, but I did not want to push medicine, so I took classes to become a certified Nutritional Counselor, as I wanted to spread the word about raw food and natural methods of healing. Currently I am studying to become a Naturopathic Doctor.

After taking insulin twice a day for several years, I no longer suffer from diabetes and do not take any insulin or pills. Now I’m free from medication and vibrantly alive on raw.

Queen Afua is giving me the inspiration I need right now, before I get lunch.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xxdHN_GtC2c]

Oh my goodness.  I really want to be this wise and be able to inspire people too.  There are so many people like me who have suffered from the “Corporate Kitchen” and food addiction and have looked for answers everywhere.  When I went raw 2 years ago it was the best thing EVER!  I know it’s part of the answer, a large part.  However, education is just as important.  I have to educate myself so that my new habits become a lifestyle.  There is so much to learn, but it all rings true to me.

What I’ve eaten today:

  • Green Smoothie – 2 bananas, spinach, cup and 1/2 of frozen mango
  • Baby Carrots as a snack

Mood – I was very calm this morning.  As the day goes on I’m feeling a little irritable because I can’t run to food…my normal coping mechanism.

Day 23 ended with no meat, no sugar…just a big salad with sunflower seeds, grapes, and some olives later that night. Maybe my body wanted some fat. I had a lil headache but it passes. I’m accustomed to having chocolate when I’m on my monthly (TMI…it’s been different. I can really tell I’ve been eating differently. You ladies know what I mean.), so it was a bit of a struggle after work. Struggle in the mind. I just went home…no stops. It works out better that way.

Day 25

Weight: didn’t feel like weighing myself today.

Today I’ve had an apple, my usual big lunch salad, and a box of rasberries. No candy, nothing that would have me tripping out later. Oh I’m such a creature of habit. i bought a new receipe e-book yesterday from Raw Freedom Community. I can’t wait to make some of the stuff!!! OH my goodness. The food looks so good in the photos. I need some options. I realize that I’m getting bored. I don’t want to be cooking everynight, but I need some options.

I’ve also been watching Louise Hay’s You Can Change Your Life Series on YouTube.  I love it.  She says the key to good living is to love yourself.  I think she’s right.  It’s hard though to look in the mirror and say “I love and accept me right now, as I am right now”.  I want to be able to say that.  It’s not just about weight, but that has been a major issue for me since I was 8 (my first “diet” per doctor’s orders).  Oh…the journey…the journey.

Yesterday was a good day.  The only problem was that I forgot my after lunch snack (fruit) and was really hungry from around 3 till I got a chance to grab a banana at Au Bon Pain.  That was a little rough.  I have to remember to carry some back up food.  I had some bad diarrhea too, but when I went raw in 2006 for 3 months I remember dealing with that during the first 2 weeks and then it went away.  I took some psyllium husk in my green smoothie this morning to help cleanse.  I think it’s going to be a good day.

Day 5 I ate:
Green smoothie with spinach, 2 bananas, frozen mango, and frozen blueberries
3/4 cup of raw walnuts
Large salad with olives, carrots, romaine, sunflower seeds, mushrooms, and olive oil
1 banana
Large salad with walnuts and olive oil

Day 5 Weight: 182.5

Today so far I’ve just had my morning green smoothie.  Today I added Kale to the mix of regular ingredients that I use wanting more dark greens.  It was a lil “wheatgrass”-ish, but not that strong.  It was very very green.  LOL.

I weight myself everyday when I wake up and this morning the scale said 181.5.  So, so far I’m losing about .5 to 1 pound each day.  I’m sure that has a lot to do with the drastic reduction of calories.  You have to understand…I was eating a LOT of sugar.  My meals were fairly healthy but I was a chocolate and ice cream addict with a habit of overeating and binging out on sugar at least 3 times a week or more.  I could go through 1300 in one evening with burgers and a pint of Ben and Jerry’s on top of what I had for breakfast and lunch.  So, I’m sure it’s a shock to the system…but a good shock.

Yesterday I went to the grocery store to get Kale and Spinach and I felt weird but not very tempted.  I would catch myself looking at some cooked familiar friend and then realize…I don’t want that…I want freedom.  I’m not willing to trade the freedom of weight loss.  I’m not willing to trade in the freedom of not worrying and fretting over what I’m going to eat.  I’m not willing to start the bumpy ride of self hate base on eating bad things and beating myself up.  I’m Free and I won’t be a slave to my habits or my stomach.  I’m free.

These People are inspiring me on my Raw Food Journey.  They all look wonderful, beautiful, and healthy.  That’s Black Power…Health Power! I’ve seen some of these legends speak in person…Aris and Dick Gregory.  Storm and his wife Jinjee have a great website and I’ve been blessed by their books and videos.  Here in DC I’ve gone to events that Khepere and the Mojo Juice Club have put on.  African American are going raw and are glad about it.  If I can look half as good as Karyn and Annette when I get to their age…I will be glad about that too.  Black don’t crack, huh.  LOL
